As homeowners in the UK, we’re more energy-conscious than ever before, and quite rightly.

That’s why we asked our bathroom champions for 11 of the best ways to reduce your energy consumption in the bathroom, and with any luck, your bill payments too!

We originally wrote this article to support Big Energy Saving Week 2022, but we hope you’ll apply them for years to come. #EnergyKnowHow

Our Favourite Ways To Save Energy In The Bathroom In One Handy Guide:

1. Perhaps The Simplest Of Our Energy Saving tips – Turn The Taps Off If You're Not Using Them!

Water.org estimates that you use around 6 litres of water per minute brushing your teeth with the tap running. Turning your tap off between brushing your teeth or rinsing your hair will reduce your water consumption and potentially reduce your water bill! To be extra thrifty, you can also invest in water saving bathroom taps that use less water per second. Explore our range of taps here.

2. Don’t Flush Cotton Buds Down The Drain

An average flush contains 7 litres of water. That's 7 litres of wasted water every time you flush for one or two cotton buds that weigh no more than 1 gram. Put your cotton buds in the bin and save energy and money instead of spending it on wasted water.

3. Install A Dual-Flush Toilet And Save Up To 80 Litres Per Day!

Dual-flush toilets are one of the easiest ways to save water whilst changing nothing about your lifestyle. Most of our toilets are dual-flush and whilst competitively priced also saves you money off your water bills with every flush! See which one suits you best here.

4. Switch Your Radiator To An Electric Heated Towel Rail.

Electric heated towel rails operate using your home's electricity supply which could save you energy and money over a traditional radiator working on your boiler system. Electric towel rails come with a thermostat where you can switch to 'off' when your bathroom isn't in use. This means you can switch them off even if you're still heating the rest of your home. Check out our selection of heated towel rails here!

5. Take A Shower Instead Of A Bath

An average bath uses 80 litres of water compared to a shower an 8-minute shower which used 62 litres. To put that scale of water consumption into context, we're told to drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water a day. That means, by having a shower instead of a bath, you are saving enough water to meet the hydration requirements of an adult for 9 whole days.

You don't have to give up your routine, as showering in a suitable enclosure can still create the relaxing feeling of a bath. Check out our enclosures here

6. Don't Overfill Your Tub When You Have A Bath

If you just can't resist the urge to fill your tub and sink into a world of relaxation after a tough week at work, you can still save water and money in the process! Don't fill the tub up to the top – water is displaced when you get in, so reduce the amount of water you put in the bath and stop litres of water ending up down the overflow valve.

7. Reduce your water temperature

Heating water uses a lot of energy, so next time, turn your shower or bath to a slightly cooler temperature than usual. You probably won't notice the difference in temperature after a few minutes, but you'll see the drop in bills! Our thermostatic shower valves are a great way of controlling your temperature.

8. Fix Any Leaking Taps

A leaky tap can waste up to 5,500 litres per year – that's enough to fill a paddling pool every week for the entire summer! However, all of our taps come with a standard 10 year ‘Fit and Forget’ Guarantee, meaning you won’t have to worry about leaky faucets! Look at our customer services promises! if that doesn't convince you.

9. Use LED Lighting

It is common knowledge that LED bulbs last longer but did you know they use up to 80% less energy than a standard light bulb? That's why we've made sure our full range of bathroom lighting is compatible with energy-efficient LED bulbs! Invest in energy-saving light bulbs for bathrooms throughout your home, and you'll quickly save on bulb costs and energy.

10. Use Appliances With Motion Sensors

In a family home, it's a constant battle to get everyone to switch off lights and appliances. Using products with internal motion sensors is a fail-safe way to save energy as they will automatically turn off electrical items. Our Bally range of LED mirrors is a perfect example of this in a modern-day bathroom!

11. Ventilate With Windows Rather Than Fans

How much energy does a bathroom fan use? Compared to lightbulbs, wall and ceiling fans use very little power. However, we're more likely to leave a fan running 24/7, allowing that energy usage to stack up! Turn off your fan and use a window to ventilate during the summer months.
