What is a BTU and why does it matter?

By Peter Wootton 9 days ago 12 Views

So, you’re on the search for the perfect heated towel rail or radiator and you’ve found one you love, that will look great in your bathroom space. So far, so good! But don’t forget one all-important question: how much heat will it actually provide?

No one wants to invest in a new heating device and then find out it’s not actually powerful enough. It’s equally annoying to be overpowered by heat and constantly sweating. So how do you find a room heater that gets it just right? That’s where BTUs come in.

You might have already seen radiators and towel racks with a BTU rating and found yourself wondering, “What is BTU?” The answer is pretty simple, really: BTU is a unit of measurement used throughout the heating and plumbing industry, which tells you how much heat a device provides.

What does BTU stand for?

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. 1 BTU is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1ºF. It’s about the same amount of energy as you get from a single matchstick. 1 BTU is approximately equal to 1055 joules. You might be used to thinking in kilowatts, but you can’t directly convert BTU to kW. Instead, you could say that 1 kW is equal to 3412 BTUs per hour.

It’s not really important to know the precise mathematical formula behind the British Thermal Unit, though. The more important question is, “What is the BTU output of my heating device?” Every heating device has a BTU rating. On the Bathroom Takeaway website, you can find out the BTU rating of any radiator or heated towel rail by taking a quick look at the Product Details section. Once you have this number, it doesn’t take long to find out if your heater is powerful enough for the room you want to put it in.

How to work out the BTU of a room

You can get a rough idea of the right BTU for room size by using a simple calculation: (Length x Width x Height) x 90. So first, find out the cubic area of your room by multiplying length x width x height. Then multiply that figure by 90. For example, if your bathroom is 5m long, 5m wide and 2m tall then you need a heater with an output of around 4,500 BTUs.

If that sounds too difficult, don’t panic! There are plenty of BTU room calculators available online, which can give you a quick guide to the right BTU for room size. Just do a quick search for “BTU room calculator” or “BTU calculator heat” to find one.

If you want to be completely safe and absolutely sure, the best way would be to consult your plumber, who can give you an expert estimate by factoring in the number of windows, what the walls are made of and other important info.

The Bathroom Takeaway customer service team is also here to help! We want buying bathrooms to be as easy as 1-2-3, so we’ll always do our best to help you find the product that’s perfect for you.

Bathroom Storage – Which Cabinet is Right for You?

By Peter Wootton 9 days ago 9 Views

The ideal bathroom storage furniture is designed to be hardy and long-lasting, ensuring style and class that provides a reliable storage option for years to come. It is imperative you select furniture that fits the décor of your room, and suits your needs.

At Bathroom Takeaway we offer a plethora of storage options, and few are as popular and effective as the bathroom cabinet.

The Bathroom Cabinet

One of the most versatile examples of bathroom furniture is the humble cabinet. With options such as floor standing and wall hung, bathroom cabinets are a necessity for reducing clutter, keeping your bathroom a practical, yet relaxing environment.

Bathroom cabinets are available in a range colours to match your bathroom needs and bathroom takeaway has a wide selection, ranging from white to ash grey, to help bring your bathroom together and make it an aesthetically pleasing space to be proud of.

Often doubling up as a mirror, bathroom cabinets can add both style and practicality to your wash room. An untidy bathroom is an unhappy bathroom – and a bathroom cabinet serves as a perfect place to store your toiletries and bathroom accessories.

Cabinet Types – To Hang or to Stand?

Before you go about designing your ideal bathroom storage system, you must decide which option is best for you. There is no right or wrong answer for which type of cabinet is best; both have features that make them excellent in their own respective ways.

Hanging and floor standing cabinets are two popular and common methods of bathroom storage.

Hanging cabinets sit upon a wall fixture, and stay attached to your bathroom wall – they can be fitted in a variety of places, such as above a toilet or a basin.

Floor standing cabinets are typically larger and fill a wall space from their base to their top. They are mounted to the floor (and sometimes the wall) to ensure stability, and provide multiple levels of shelf storage.

Our pre-assembled units make it easier than ever to add complementary furniture to your bathroom. Consider our soft-closing options to keep your bathroom space quiet and peaceful.

Some bathroom cabinets can be heavy, so you should ensure you have a professional to mount them for you, and take care. Also, keep an eye out for any of our matching bathroom sets, to make your bathroom feel truly cohesive and immersive.

Floor Standing Cabinets

Floor standing bathroom cabinets are an excellent option for rented or temporary accommodation, as they can be mounted with minimal effect on the long-term structure of the room. Additionally, they can be easily replaced or taken with you in the event of moving house.

When properly mounted to the floor, free-standing bathroom cabinets have no risk of being knocked over or toppling, making them safe for the family home. They also help provide an attractive way to conceal laundry baskets, whilst still being accessible in the bathroom. Free-standing bathroom cabinets can also provide clear, separated drawer space to keep everything organised and tidy.

Floor standing cabinets are also commonly larger than wall mounted cabinets, offering multiple levels of storage space. This makes them excellent for large groups of sharers or families, with lots of space to store bathroom items, and keep the room clutter free. Tall cabinets can be a great option for storing items unsafe for children, such as sharp objects or medicine, as they can be kept out of harm’s reach whilst children’s items are kept on a lower shelf.

Floor standing cabinets are incredibly variable, and Bathroom Takeaway’s website makes it easy to choose between the range of shapes and sizes to make your bathroom feel unique and homely.

Wall Mounted Cabinets

Wall mounted cabinets provide a contemporary feel for a more permanent bathroom alteration, and are an incredibly effective way to utilise space. Wall mounted cabinets do not reduce the floor space, so give the illusion of an open room. One of the biggest advantages of wall mounted cabinets is their suitability to almost any bathroom. In the case of having reduced floor space, wall mounted cabinets can be placed above existing bathroom furniture to save room, such as sinks or toilets.

As wall mounted cabinets are so effective at utilising space, it is extremely easy to have multiple cabinets together in the same room, allowing wall mounted cabinets to provide the same amount of storage as a floor cabinet.

Furthermore, this allows cabinets hung above sinks to hold sink related items, such as hand wash or toothbrushes and toothpaste, or cabinets above toilets to hold toilet related items, such as toilet roll. Overall, this can make the room feel very efficient and modern.

Our mirrored options also make wall mounted cabinets double up excellently as mirrors; this dual purpose saves space, negating the requirement to hang or stand a mirror, and allows the user to get ready every morning in style and comfort.

Furthermore, tall, wall mounted cupboards can extend up high to take up unused wall space, making the use of the room even more efficient.

Like floor mounted cabinets, wall mounted bathroom cabinets can provide a safe option for the storage of adult items, such as medicine, in a family home, keeping these items out of the reach of young children.

Some wall-mounted cabinet designs also offer double doors, making them a perfect option for couples who want the sense of their own space, and many cabinets may even come with matching hung vanity units to really give a sense of consistent style in the room.
