Showers Buying Guide
In this in-depth shower buying guide we’ll give you all the information you need to make choosing a shower as easy as 1-2-3.
The shower is a wonderful invention. It has the power to wake and invigorate us after a good (or bad) night’s sleep and scrub away the worries of a hectic day in work. In our busy, on-the-go, modern lives the shower is where we can grab a precious few moments of warm, soothing respite where a bath would otherwise take too long.
Considering how essential showers have become to our daily routines, it’s crucially important that you find the perfect model to suit your bathing habits. In this guide to buying a shower, we’ll highlight the finer details associated with choosing the ideal shower from Bathroom Takeaway.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A SHOWER
The two main things to consider when weighing up your shower options are the type of domestic water system in your home and the resulting water pressure you get from it. These factors can have a major bearing on the types of showers available to you. Most UK homes run off one of the three following types of water systems.
1. GRAVITY FED SYSTEMS
Gravity fed systems generally feature a cold water tank in your loft and a water cylinder in an airing cupboard. Because they’re reliant on good, old fashioned gravity, these fairly common systems generally suffer from low water pressure. But the positive news is that you can boost your pressure using a shower pump, which can feed up to three shower units successfully.
2. COMBI BOILER SYSTEMS
Combi boiler systems don’t have tanks or water cylinders. Instead, they rely on mains pressure and a wall-hung boiler to deliver hot water whenever you need it. These types of systems are becoming increasingly popular nationwide and typically provide the highest water pressures. As such, they’re extremely well-suited to thermostatic shower mixers.
3. UNVENTED SYSTEMS
Unvented hot water systems are fed directly from the cold mains water feed. This means that they can deliver hot water at mains pressure, which is great news for the performance of your shower. Your water will either be heated directly by an immersion heater or indirectly through your central heating system, solar panels (if you have them) or by heat pumps.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SHOWERS FOR YOUR BATHROOM
All of the showers we sell at Bathroom Takeaway are thermostatic models. That’s because thermostatic showers give you optimal control over the temperature and flow of your shower. They maintain a consistent water temperature for the duration of your shower, even if a toilet is flushed or a tap is switched on elsewhere in your home.
If you’re planning to buy a shower online, we have several different thermostatic shower valves for you to choose from. Each has its own distinct set of benefits and features. However, they all share in common an anti-scald technology, which makes thermostatic showers perfect for families with young children. Whichever model you go for, we recommend hiring a qualified plumber to carry out the installation for you.
BAR VALVE SHOWER SETS
Our beautiful bar valve shower sets score highly in the functionality and fashion stakes. Choose from rigid risers with luxuriant rainfall shower heads or valve and slide rail kits with adjustable shower heads. Plus, many of our bar valve shower sets benefit from in-built Cool Touch technology. This circulates cold water throughout the shower valve to ensure that it’s never too hot to handle.
EXPOSED OR CONCEALED SETS
If you love chrome piping, an exposed shower set lays it all out on display. These shower sets celebrate the technology on board, including Cool Touch in many cases, and can be fitted with minimal fuss. If minimalism is more your thing, then a concealed shower set is for you. With all the pipework discreetly concealed, these streamlined units are the ideal choice for modern suites.
TWIN HEAD SHOWER SETS
For the multi-tasking bathers among you, twin head shower sets give you the best of both worlds. Fixed rain shower heads loosen any knots with powerful jets of massaging water. While a second, adjustable shower head gives you the freedom to rinse on-demand with added levels of accuracy – perfect for getting shampoo suds out of your eyes or for cleaning down your shower enclosure.
THERMOSTATIC BATH SHOWER MIXERS
Thermostatic bath shower mixers offer unparalleled levels of control and flexibility. Say you’ve immersed yourself in a sumptuous bubble bath but would like to rinse your hair under the shower; a bath shower mixer lets you do both with ease. These exquisite, uncluttered mixers are a delight to use. Plus, with our 10-year ‘Fit and Forget’ guarantee you can be sure they’re built to last.
